A Study of M. J. Adler and C. Van Doren s Reading Method as Liberal Education

Abstract
People who received liberal education will possess an ability to discern and deliberate their problems and draw the solutions. But, people s abilities cannot help being different one another according to the liberal state of each person. Liberal education whose necessity is more requested while people are living in modern times is examined from an angle of R. M. Hutchins. Also, this research intends to investigate the values of liberal education through the reading, one of various methods for cultivation of liberal arts. This research considers reading as a liberal education of university and examines reading methods by focusing on How to Read a Book written by M. J. Adler and C. Van Doren. It will examine 4 levels of reading and the methods for each level, suggested by writers, and explore conditions for cultivating refinement and becoming an active reader based on them.
