Abstract |
This paper deals with curriculum development of the liberal education at Catholic University of Daegu as a case study. The process of development consists of three steps: setting up the aim of liberal education, reforming the curriculum in accordance of the aim, and inventing the operating system to support the curriculum. First of all, in search for a new perspective of liberal education at university level, this paper suggests the model of educated man as ‘adventurous-self’. This adventurous-self is supposed to realize its whole potential by the activities of ‘discovery of self’ without any interruptions.
The main frame of curriculum is divided into two groups: basic mandatory courses vs advanced selective courses. The idea behind this reform is 1) human understanding based upon Catholic belief, 2) learning various forms of knowledge (humanities, social science, natural sciences, art, mathematics), 3) social sensitivity and participation for multi-cultural environments, 5) fostering career capabilities.
This paper introduces the concept of ‘structure of education power’ in which managements of coursework, administrative supports, and evaluation system interact each other to produce significant synergy effects. The whole process of liberal education is to be supervised by ‘the institute of liberal education’(tentative name) as the control tower of it. |
