Abstract |
Shakespeare s 『The Merchant of Venice』 is a classic drama that has not only its historical characteristics but also many universal issues which still concern us today. It is very interesting and easy drama to play in the classroom, which enhances the expression skill and the communication ability of students. If it is too difficult to play the full text, then the students may edit and reduce it to their art and taste.
As far as the themes of 『The Merchant of Venice』 are concerned, it shows a wide scope of the problems and issues in the human society. That is, the drama weaves such themes as religious conflict, money and love, justice and mercy, multiculturalism, music and education into its complex set of its plots. These are the controversial topics which are actively discussed both in the Korea society and intentionally. Important to say is here that Shakespeare didn t treat them in the manner of the traditional points of view or in terms of black and white. In short, through 『The Merchant of Venice』 students can learn the intergrative convergent thinking and the creative communication. |
