Abstract |
This study is based upon the criticism that the established studies on multicultural education in the university level have been limited to those for elementary or secondary school pre-service teachers and most of those studies have regarded multicultural education as not related to the other minority discourse. In this vein, this study aims to develop, implement, and evaluate the multicultural education course as civil education for the purpose of developing multicultural competence, which means the ability to empathize the suffering and difficulties of minorities as well as the ability to respect the others. For the purpose, we reconceptualized ‘disaporaic experience’ as the ‘overlapped experience’ with those of other minorities, and let the students search for the lived experience within their lives, reflect upon the experience by analyzing sociocultural context within which the experiences are embedded, and express them by utilizing various media. As results of implementing and evaluating the course, it is revealed that this course enhanced the ability to empathize others’ suffering, team-teaching caused the students alert during the course, and expression culminated the educational process of circulating experience, reflection, and expression. |
