Abstract
In a highly competitive society where we live, it is not expected that colleges and universities of today will continue to grow and prosper in both quantity and quality as easily as they did in the past. As an educational system shifts from the supplier-centered perspective to the consumer-centered, or student-centered one, they are required to adopt a consumer-based approach to education service. They are also asked to make educational environment more comfortable and to offer the best quality education service to students, who are the main customers of education service, in the light of customer satisfaction. To meet the demands and remain competitive among them, each of the colleges and universities should adopt and use a new educational concept called Specialization of Education, which is consumer-oriented and differentiated from other educational institutions. To set up the consumer-oriented policy of education service, some marketing concepts, such as quality of education service, customer satisfaction, etc., should be applied to the student-centered education service. To provide differentiated education service through specialization of education, we need to make the education service unique and distinct, and make an effort to promote the university s brand image. That is, specialization of college education is a comprehensive concept including an education consumer s impression, feeling, evaluation, perception, and experience, etc. In general, the strategy for specialization of education is used to make the service differentiated from that of competitors and allow consumers to identify it. Specialization of education creates concrete and abstract value of education through differentiated education service. Consequently, specialization of education is considered to be a mass of added value derived from education service. An effective strategy for specialization of education is to create a new image of the university through the remarkable growth in a particular area like general education program, rather than the gradual progress in the whole educational system. To this end, we need to understand the needs and characteristics of students, and make an attempt to make the education program differentiated from other institutions through various refined programs students really want. In other words, specialization of general education program by track provides students with a newly differentiated education service. Tracking of the general education program by field helps enhance the reputation of Daejeon University as a renowned educational institution.
