Abstract
This study aims to investigate the nature of knowledge-based society and establish the theoretical foundation of liberal education system in university. It can be summarized as follows. First, knowledge-based society is an era emphasizing the integration of knowledge, the culture of knowledge creation and unique personalities. Second, the knowledge-based society requires ‘adventurous self’ as a new model of human beings, who possesses creativity and the ability to integrate knowledges. Especially, creative thinking is the essential condition for the knowledge-based society. Third, we have to reform the liberal education system in university to go along with the knowledge-based society. Above all, the ‘open education’ system should be devised and the whole perspective of liberal education should be changed. Fourth, the purpose of liberal education system can be legitimately understood as ‘discovery of self’ concerning to the change in perspective of liberal education. Learners are to be spontaneous in learning, while educators are to be professionals of coursework development. It is definitely necessary to create curriculum focusing ‘the forms of knowledge’, to develop materials for creativity and to provide ‘close educational relationship’ as a new kind of teaching method.
