Abstract |
Sangmyung University is proud of its rich history, comprehensive degree programs, and successful alumni. None of this would be possible without a relentless pursuit of improvement through institutional self-reflection and change management. It is this introspective tradition that has brought the University s Seoul campus to reevaluate the direction of its general English program. We are determined for our programs to address both the immediate, local language goals (testing-oriented) and the more distant, global goals (communication-oriented). In addition, the program should be built on solid theoretical foundations in regards to English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching methods and second language acquisition (SLA) theory. To accomplish this, the ADDIE design model was adapted for systematic organizational and curricular change and applied to our educational context. This has resulted in the addition and elimination of courses, the hiring of additional faculty, the development of comprehensive standards for all courses, course-wide summative assessments, and a system for ongoing evaluation of courses, instructors, and students. |
