The value of work-oriented education as resurfacing the meaning of general education in university educations, especially the necessity to be resurfacing the identity of general education that is fundamental to university education is an urgent issue than at any time. At this point, this study was conducted for the purpose of researching the value of work-oriented education, which is currently offered as a general education requirement.
The survey was conducted with 36 professors, 333 freshmen to verify the effectiveness of work-oriented education. 79% of the professors and 77% of the freshmen answered that the gardening and farming are the proper area of work-oriented education. About the curriculum category of work-oriented education, 34% of the professors wanted it to be a general education requirement and 26% of the professors wanted it to a general education selective. Most of the students(42%) wanted it to be as a general education selective or a pass/fail class rather than a general education requirement. About the satisfaction of work-oriented education, 29% of the professors, 59% of the freshmen were contented with it. 70% of the freshmen wanted work-oriented education to be retained in terms of character education.
To improve work-oriented education, first, redefining the meaning of work-oriented education is necessary. Second, expanding or reorganizing of the domain of work-oriented education is needed. Third, helping students to engage in work-oriented education not because of their duty but for their choice in terms of the curriculum formation is essential. Last but not least, fourth, providing with work fee or incentive pay for students by promoting work-oriented education to specialize through commoditizing the products from work-oriented education can provide positive outcomes.
Work-oriented education has several values; increase understanding of objects, improve positive characters of citizen to understand human society and nature, and enhancement physical strength through experience.
The true education is possible within well-rounded education, and the meaning and purpose of the true education could be fulfilled through work-oriented education. Also, this study is worthy because it may make a significant contribution to realize the purpose of work-oriented education. |
