The present condition and prospect of the education on ‘Writing and Speaking’ - A case of Catholic University of Daegu

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to survey the current situation of teaching speaking and writing in the Catholic university of Daegu, and to present the better prospect of the teaching. The knowledge convergence society in the 21st century requires people with the competency of creative problem-solving, the competency of communication, and the character and quality to be equipped with as a world citizen. In this context, universities are aggressively reflecting the needs in our society, and reorienting the educational direction. Teaching speaking and writing is reinforced in that especially, the ability fostered in the course of speaking and writing coincides with the ability needed in knowledge convergence society. Accordingly, various speaking and writing programs are provided in universities. The speaking and writing programs in universities are classified into 3 categories. The first type is a separation type where speaking and writing are taught separately, and the second is a parallel type where speaking and writing are taught together as one subject, and the third is application type where writing is the main part and speaking is utilized in the form of presentation and discussion. Falling into the second category as a parallel type, a regular subject under the title of “Writing and Speaking” is provided in the Catholic University of Daegu. Developed by the Catholic University, it self, its textbook is comprised effectively for strengthening the competency of communication by studying the theory and practice for 15 weeks. In addition to regular programs, writing contests, discussion competitions, and intensive speaking and writing courses provided in vacations, 1:1 writing tutoring service, writing guiding classes, and special lectures by invited speakers are held to increase students’ competency of communication. Like this, the regular programs and extra curriculum interacts with each other, and teaching speaking and writing in the Catholic University of Daegu are producing synergy effect. However, such matters as the reduction in number of students in class, introduction of intensive subjects as a regular program, WAC(writing across curriculum) should be considered for the better education.
