Composition Education for the Department of Science and Engineering Based on Convergence Thinking - Focused on the Writing of Academic Essays Utilizing Literary Texts |

Abstract |
The human character that is required by the knowledge-convergence society of the twenty-first century can be said to be men of talent who possess ability to conduct researches into problems for oneself and to create new value by understanding the flow of change, while at the same time possessing problem-solving abilities based on all-round general education. Giving consideration to such needs of the times, the goal of general education of writing should also be switched to fostering talented persons of convergence type. ‘Talented persons of convergence type’ refer to men of talent who possess the systematic thinking of integration and connection that can perceive and evaluate the phenomena and connections among all things on the basis of creativity and imagination. Accordingly, this piece of writing paid attention to the fact that convergence education, of which the fundamental attributes are connections and integration, can be realized through linking thoughts and discoveries that make discoveries of common ground between two heterogeneous studies; therefore it prepared practical teaching and learning strategies as well as a learning program in order to realize this in training for writing.
First, the learning program’s development focused on writing learning program utilizing literary texts based on correlation of literature and engineering. This is valid in the sense that learners are led to discover the intersecting point of two heterogeneous studies naturally and to develop convergence and complex thinking skills while understanding the common attributes of two studies; especially it is effective in cultivating knowledge in liberal arts, which is deficient in learners of science and engineering. Secondly, the specific application of learning program and teaching and learning strategies focused on collaborative learning and academic essay writing. The educational effect and significance can be found in the sense that, in the case of the former, communicative skills, social skills, teamwork, and leadership as well as followership are developed in a balanced way through the conversational community within the conversation community; similarly, in the latter case, the educational effect and significance can be found in the fact that critical, logical thinking skills and creativity as well as problem-solving abilities are easily developed.
Recently, as we can see, interdisciplinarity convergence subject development and team-teaching case of a way of convergence education. But, I haven’t found applied case based on specific learning-program. In the thesis, the writing education should be to cultivate a convergence thinking ability that will be able to understand holistic things or specific application. |
