A Study on the Practical Use of Case Brief Method as Legal Writing

Abstract
The purpose of this study is firstly, to survey case briefs which target cases, the major sources of law and case briefing, the process of briefing cases, and secondly, to apply IRAC method not only to legal writing, but also general genres of writing, searching for a method of utilizing IRAC as a method of analyzing general phenomena and summarizing them. There are various components constituting case briefs. Among them, the most necessary components are Issue, Rule, Application and Conclusion. which comprise a series of Issue-Rule-Application-Conclusion, functioning as a IRAC method. The case brief method is practically needed to speedily understand and summarize the cases released in enormous amount in the countries of common law system. Additionally, the method applied to general writing can be effectively and efficiently utilized for writing various texts such as news reports, columns, articles, and papers.
