Abstract |
With more importance of university general education, the essence and practicability of general education is being diversely reviewed. In particular, ‘writing’ designated in many universities as required general education need to be reviewed regarding the purpose and practicability of writing education.
In general, the reason why practicability is important in general education is that vocational education is emphasized. However, the education contents are fragmentary so it cannot guarantee sustainability of the effects. General education focusing on the essence is to cultivate basic knowledge and practical ability.
Meanwhile, ‘writing’ subject designated as required general education at many universities are facing many problems as it claims to advocate practical writing education. For example, there is the education focusing on writing based on the field of studies or methods to write self-introduction for a job. This writing education focuses on type and result-based writing. To highlight the essence of writing education, it needs to improve ability to express and think and get out of weight on type and result.
From this perspective, dialogic writing is a methodology to highlight the essence of general education. Dialogic writing methodology emphasizes writing through critical understanding of text and creation of dialogic relationships. This methodology has an advantage of understanding ‘reading and writing’ and ‘process and result’ comprehensively.
True practical education should be applicable permanently. Education presenting the essence of general education such as development of thinking skills and creation of talents can be practical education of all time. In addition, to realize both the essence of general education and practicability of writing education, a dialogic approach based on not type and result but various interactions and internal conversation is probably necessary. |
