Abstract |
This study proposes competence-based education as a new direction of general education, investigates S Women’s University’s case, and presents significance and tasks of the change to competence-based general education. It asserts the necessity of competence-based education as follows: first, competence-based education overcomes the conflict between liberal education and vocational education through a combination of the two needs; second, it proposes a new approach to knowledge and new teaching methods, criticizing the traditional curriculum focused on knowledge; and third, it links between general education and specialized education by solving the limits of the existing school curriculum. This study examines the competence-based education program of S Women’s University as a case. The university has two types of required general education program, ‘Competence Development Course I ’ and ‘Competence Development Course II ’, through which students can develop basic and key competencies. It also evaluates students’ competencies with SM-CLA(SM-Collegiate Learning Assessment), and offers upgrade courses for improvement of cognitive and social competencies. The paper shows the result of SM-CLA and the effect of upgrade courses. On the basis of the case study, it suggests that competence-based education should be based upon intrinsic value of general education, be connected with the existing academic curriculum, and make continuous efforts for developing teaching methods and instructors’ competencies. |
