This study presents a plan to improve the liberal arts basic curriculum by examining and analyzing the status of this curriculum within domestic universities through the division of basic education, as well as the liberal arts and literacy areas of the standard model of liberal arts basic education. As a result of examining the ratio of liberal arts basic education to graduation credits, the average ratio of basic education in 132 universities was 26.2%. This is well below the minimum standard of 35% suggested by the standard model of liberal arts basic education. In addition, the average ratio by area was analyzed to be 10.4% for basic education, 12.1% for liberal arts education, and 3.6% for literacy education. As a result of analyzing the types by region, establishment type, and university size, the difference in ratio was not large. Due to the insufficient ratio of liberal arts basic education organization and the differentiation in the organization of this curriculum between universities, the proposal of the standard model for liberal arts basic education cannot objectively be regarded as an effective from the prerequisites.
However, the division of areas in the standard model can contribute to highlighting the fundamental reasons for the formation of the current basic curriculum, and for suggesting improvements. The lack of an understanding of the precise goals of liberal arts basic education is revealed as the phenomenon of adjusting the curriculum within a limited proportion of liberal arts basic education. The improvement of the curriculum to achieve the ideological orientation and the goals of liberal arts basic education should increase the ratio of formation by area and ensure the independence of the curriculum.
