Abstract
This study aims to explore the effects of WAC(writing across curriculum) program of a university dedicated to research and education in science and engineering on students’ critical thinking ability and learning ability which lead to growing competitiveness in higher education. To this end, this paper describes the case of WI-HASS(Writing Intensive-Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) course which POSTECH developed as WAC program in conjunction with several liberal arts courses. By analyzing the students responses to the first implementation of the WI-HASS, this study suggests the future direction and ways to improve the WI-HASS with three areas of improvement. First, after the introduction of the new WAC program, it is necessary to improve the existing basic subjects from the perspective of transfer ability improvement . Second, it is necessary to establish a rational role-sharing and cooperation system between HASS professors and WI professors for each WI designated subject. Lastly, it is necessary to adjust the nature of the tasks of the WI-HASS course to meet the educational goals of liberal arts education in colleges of science and technology.
Key Words: WAC(writing across curriculum), WI(Writing Intensive) course, basic writing, general education, thinking ability, transfer
