The present condition of common essential subject and improvement direction in university s liberal education

Abstract
The writer wrote this writing in order to investigate the essential curriculum in liberal eduction. First it tried to observe the agency which takes charge of a liberal education. The result, they are 11 colleges(6.3%), 14 ‘unitㆍroomㆍcenterㆍoffice’ (8.0%), 80 university faculties(45.5%), 19 departments(10.8%), & 52 the academic affairs offices(29.5%) in 176 universities. The writer observe the formation of culture curriculum. The writer found that it accomplished with three branches. That are ‘common essential subject’, ‘portional essential subject’, & ‘free choice’. It will be good that the culture curriculum’s 42 credits are divided equally into three territories each 14 credits. The ‘common essential subject’ is composed three territories. That is ‘culture Korean language’, ‘culture English’, & ‘the others’. ‘culture Korean language’s adoption rate is 71.6%(176 colleges). In ‘culture Korean language’ territory, ‘writing’s adoption rate is 51.6%, ‘overview Korean language’s rate is 30.2%, ‘reading’s rate is 19.8%, ‘speech’s rate is 11.9%, ‘Chinese character’s rate is 19.8%. And the universities average credits is 3.0. ‘Culture English’s adoption rate is 84.7%(149 universities). And the universities average credits is 5.4. And in ‘the others’, ‘culture computers’ s adoption rate is 52.8%(93 universities), And the universities average credits is 3.4. It is after that, ‘religion’(21.6%), ‘philosophy’(13.1%), ‘history’(11.4%), ‘personality’(11.4%), ‘ethics’(9.7%), ‘science’(9.7%), ‘physical education’(8.0%), ‘mathematics’(7.4%), ‘new student guidance’(6.8%), ‘2nd foreign language’(6.8%), ‘sicial service’(5.1%), ‘leadership’(4.5%) etc. By the way, religionㆍphilosophyㆍethicsㆍsocial serviceㆍleadership are ultimately belongs ‘personality education’. The writer observed of the culture curricula’s tendency in KoreaㆍAmericanㆍFranceㆍJapaneseㆍChinese’s liberal education. The results, all countries’s universities recognized the importance of ‘common essential subject’ more and more. So they increase credits and strengthen ‘common essential subject’s education. That is ‘personality education’, ‘writing’, ‘speech’, ‘leadership’ etc. The writer recognize that ‘Korean language’, ‘English’ & ‘the others’ are should be balance each 14 credits. For example, Sukmyung women’s university, Sungkyunkwan university, Hansung university, Hanrim university, Pusan university are desirable. In end the writer present the ideal model of ‘common essential subject’s curriculum.
